Introduction

The World Committee of Maritime Culture Institutes (WCMCI) is the academic consortium of the research institutes for maritime culture in East Asia. The WCMCI was established by the Director Meeting of the foremost ten research institutions in Korea, China and Japan on May 29, 2010. The WCMCI is headquartered in one of the founding members, the Institute of International Maritime Affairs(Korea Maritime University) in Busan, Korea. It is scheduled to register the International Cooperation Organization. The WCMCI comprises 10 world-class research institutions.

Its members include Institute of International Maritime Affairs(Korea Maritime University), Research Center for Humanities and Social Sciences(Academia Sinica), Port Cities Research Center(Kobe University), Institute of Island Culture(Mokpo National University), Department of Japanese Literature(National Taiwan University), Institute of Maritime Culture Studies(Ocean University Of China), Institute of Literature(Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences), Research Institute for the Humanities(Chinese University of Hong Kong), Institute of History(Xiamen University), and School of Asia-Pacific Studies(Zhongshan University).

The WCMCI's mission is to collectively formulate an alternative in order to build a new maritime culture of peace and coexistence through academic collaboration of world standard institutions cross the boundaries of an individual researcher, institute, and nation-state. In order to achieve the purpose, the WCMIC is endeavoring to discover the maritime cultural heritage of reconciliation and coexistence in history and literature of sea areas. The WCMCI's collaborative efforts span the academic enterprises including international symposium, mutual exchange of researchers and research materials. The WCMCI also serves as the central repository for developing joint researches between the member institutes. The WCMCI is expected to contribute powerfully to the development of world maritime culture and the social and human sciences.
